Deadly Queensland siege driven by fundamental Christian beliefs

Queensland Police have labelled last years murder of two police officers and a neighbour at a property in Wieambilla as a religiously motivated terrorist attack.

Investigators believe the Trains were driven to carry out the murders by their Christian fundamentalist belief system known as "pre-millennialism".

CRIS Director Professor Michele Grossman says cases of extremist targeted and terrorist violence are becoming more and more complicated and attacks are unlikely to be driven by a single factor like religion.

Religion itself, no matter which religion you’re talking about, is never a cause of violent extremism but what you can get are particular belief strands or interpretations of particular doctrines or particular orthodoxies.

In response to the threat of religion being weaponised in Australia, Prof Grossman said:

I don’t think that there is cause for panic or concern. All violent extremism begins with grievance.
