Dr Matteo Vergani discusses online hate at Australian Human Rights Commission panel

Dr Matteo Vergani spoke at a panel discussion following the AHRC’s Kep Enderby Memorial Lecture. The panel spoke about online hate and the need for legislative reform, and Matteo was joined by Rita Jabri Markwell and Professor Sandy O’Sullivan.

Matteo said that the implications of online racism went well beyond digital platforms.

On and offline harms are strongly interconnected. Targets of online hate are often targets of offline violence

He further explained that the lack of comprehensive and consistent data collection meant that our understanding of the scale of the harms caused by online hate is limited.
